Cantonese, housing and the Macau comparison

Front-of-house roles usually want basic Cantonese; back-of-house roles have low language bars. Unlike Macau's dorms, most Hong Kong F&B posts do not include housing — shared rooms run thousands of HKD per month, which is the biggest variable between similar-looking take-home outcomes. Where housing is provided, deductions are capped (the lower of 20% of wages or actual cost, from June 2026).

Applying and avoiding traps

The lawful route is an employer-filed ESLS application (F&B kitchen and service posts face tier-two review: 3:1 local full-time ratio by department and a 6-week recruitment window). Verify the agency's licence number, get all fees in writing before signing, and confirm a physical office. Note the September 2026 form revision (Rev. 9/2026): old forms are returned unprocessed from 12 October 2026.
