Why older applicants shortlist security

Physical demand is lower than F&B or housekeeping (standing, patrols, monitoring), conditions are simple — usually no licence, no Cantonese, no experience — and demand is steady across hotels, casino-adjacent properties, malls and residences. What you must adapt to is shifts: 12-hour rotations and nights are common, so confirm base pay, shift allowance, overtime method and rest days at the interview and have them written into the contract.

Requirements and process

Statutory qualification: under Law 4/2007 (Private Security Business), anyone performing private-security duties must hold a Security Guard Work Card issued by the Public Security Police — application requires age 18 or above, at least six years of schooling, fitness, a clean criminal record, passing the basic private-security course, and more (a dedicated form exists for non-resident workers). Common employer criteria sit on top: practical hiring band 18–55 (employer preference, not law), no major health issues, clean record. Route: Exit-Entry Permit → employer's quota application → Blue Card (MOP 100 government fee, bearer per contract) → Security Guard Work Card → entry and onboarding.

FAQ

  • Q: Do I need a licence? A: Yes by law — the Security Guard Work Card under Law 4/2007 (age 18+, schooling, basic course passed, clean record; see the government services page). Mainland guard licences are not required by most posts.
  • Q: Age ceiling? A: Statutory qualification is 18+ plus the work-card requirements; beyond that there is no unified age ceiling. Practical hiring reaches around 55 for some posts — employer preference, subject to the employer's criteria and DSAL approval.
  • Q: How are night shifts paid? A: Commonly base + allowance; confirm amounts and get them written into the contract.
